What to do in the area

If you haven’t already, take a look at our Out & About pages for suggestions of things do.

How to use the central heating

The thermostat is set at a comfortable setting, however, if you need to increase or decrease it, you will find the Hive thermostat in the kitchen. Watch the video for a brief guide on how to use it.

Quirks of the cottage.

The grade 2 listed cottage was built in the 1700s so, of course, comes with a couple of quirks which we think you will find helpful to know. These include:

Remembering to duck - If you’re tall, a friendly reminder to duck through the majority of doors!

Mind the step - The top 2 steps in the hallway stairs are a little higher than the rest so make sure you take care. It will take a couple of times to get used to it, but you will be running up them before you leave.

Recycling and general waste

There are recycling boxes outside the conservatory. If these get full, there is a recycling centre at the village hall across the road where you can empty them. It takes everything except plastic.

Once the kitchen bin gets full, there is a larger bin in the garden next to the oil tank.

Using the open fire in the lounge

Everything you will need to build a fire can be found in the pink cupboard in the lounge. We will provide enough wood, coal and kindling for a couple of fires. If you do need any more, you can purchase this at the Esso service station in Penrith.

Please make sure you clean out the ashpit before you check out as best you can.

Groceries and supplies

If you’re coming off the M6 at J39, you can stop off at the small local Co-op in Shap to pick up all your essentials. Alternatively, there are several supermarkets in Penrith town centre, including; Booths (the northern equivalent to Waitrose), M&S Foodhall, Sainsbury’s or Morrisons. They’re all about 10/15 minutes drive from the cottage.
